My Take On An Essay
Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Christine wrote her version of the best things in life, and two hours ago it was my turn. I had procrastinated, obviously. The deadline is in an hour. The deadline was 31 March '09, and there I was, starting the essay at 9.00pm of the 31st and submitting it at 11.00pm. I feel so awesome for being able to do that.

The Best Things In Life
Written by Resha Ng

I think the best things in life are split into two categories. First is the universally accepted, and the second is of personal preference. After all, everyone has their own idea of what they like and what they don't. Initially I had thought long and hard. What do I claim are the best things in life?

Last Sunday, I had gone to my grandfather's home to visit him and reunite with my family members. My puppy is considered family and she was not excluded from the gathering. My cousin's puppy too is family and made an appearance. As I sat on the ground, I observed the two puppies chasing each other around the small living room where everyone was either watching television, reading the newspaper or simply making conversation. I remember smiling at the scene before myself. A feeling of acceptance existed when family members were around. I had thought to myself at that time, family had to be one of the best things in life. It was undeniable.

I took in every last detail of everyone around me and etched it into my mind.

My thoughts turned to those living without their biological parents and those in orphanages. What about them? Well, they still have someone to care for them. Someone to make sure they are well, and not feel alone. In my opinion, family does not necessarily mean blood relatives but those who have been with you through the thick and thin since the beginning of time. Therefore, I do believe that friends can also be family. They who have shown us unconditional love deserve to be loved back unconditionally. My mother has told me once a long time ago, "Give back twice of what you receive". Words of wisdom from our elders should never be ignored, for they often contain much meaning. Thinking about it, I could sense unconditional love emitting from everyone although no one showed anything clearly. Small but genuine smiles light up the room when someone talks and many people were willing to share what they had. Even the puppies showed off their love. They do what you ask them to and follow you everywhere but never ask for anything in return. Without a second thought, I added unconditional love to my mental list of the best things in life.

I decided to show some unconditional love of my own and asked my grandfather about how he was doing.

When speaking of people close to our hearts and love, friends come to mind. Some friends go through all the sad and happy times with us while some keep a low profile and subtly give us support. We sometimes want to be alone after a major event, but we eventually turn to our friends anyway to pour our hearts out. Some friends may not be literally close to us, but they still care about us. For example, I have a friend from primary school who is in Australia right now. She and I keep in touch through the magic of the internet. I intend to visit her soon and she has offered to let me stay with her. This shows just how much we still care for each other although we haven't seen each other in years. A decade or so ago, many people had a pen pal, or wanted one. Nowadays though, not many youngsters give it a second of their thoughts. I, however, find the prospect of having a pen pal very interesting and have several of them. I may not write to them through the medium of pen and paper, but we have never met yet tell each other about all sorts of things which happen in our lives. Everyone has a different point of view as I have stated at the start, and it is very enlightening to know what others think. Friends of all kinds supply that point of view and undoubtedly should be appreciated by everyone all across the world. Friends are one of the best things in life for sure.

Closing my eyes, I pictured myself with my friends having a good time.

I longed for some fresh air and stepped out of the house. The sight of trees, bushes, flowers and grass greeted me. I felt more relaxed with the green colors surrounding me. However, no matter how healthy and green everything looked, the weather was still incredibly hot. The sun showed no mercy and the temperature was higher than usual. This was surely the effect of global warming. I loved nature and hated to see it being destroyed. What should have been a nice cool breeze was now a wave of heat. I recalled a picture I had seen in a magazine showing the ice melting at the North Pole. The homes of many creatures were vanishing because of global warming and not many people seemed to care. As that thought hit me, it really did break my heart. A few days ago there was a worldwide campaign held to create awareness in people about the need to stop global warming. During the duration of the said campaign, I called up a friend to see if she had turned off the lights in her house. She said her mother assumed that no one from this nation would have turned off their lights and refused to do so herself. This shows just how much some people care about nature. Close to not caring at all. I was deeply saddened by it. If everyone refused to take action, the temperature would continue to rise and cause a major catastrophe. I still remember a few years ago when everywhere was nice and cool, unlike the current times. I love nature very much because it has provided us with everything we need to stay healthy and alive, and still do. Many things would not exist without nature, and it was high time we became grateful for it. Nature, one of the best things in life, needs to be saved from further destruction.

Taking one more look at the greenery, I went back indoors and sat under a fan.

Slightly sweaty, I glanced around and saw everyone with a slice of mango in their hands. Shortly after, my grandfather offered me a slice. I took it with a smile on my face and a small muttering of thanks. I bit into the juicy fruit and savored the taste. It did not need any other food or drink to accompany it. It was simply delicious all on its own. I licked my lips and realized there was going to be another item on my list of the best things in life. Food was next on the said list. Food is not only good for the body, but also for the mind and soul. Because of that, it is an essential part of life. The mango I was biting into supplied the energy for me to run my life, calmed my mind and made me very happy.

I finished off the fruit and looked for more.

When I left my grandfather's house, I had become more aware of things around me. Everyday things are the best and should never be taken for granted. You'll never know how much you will miss something until it's gone, so everyone should start appreciating the little things in life while it is still there.

-x-x-x-

Like the awesome Christine said, I quote, "plagiarism just proves you have no imagination and dignity and that you lack a functioning brain. going overboard? i don't think so.". Everything written was based on true events, except for the part where I stepped out to look at greens. x3

Snow White to Coal Black ♥ No Regrets!
Saturday, March 28, 2009

I woke up at six thirty this morning to pack up for the Botanic's Junior tennis competition. Gosh, I sure had transportation problems. I am so not the person to call up for ways to go somewhere. It was quite boring though, so I won't talk about it. All I will say is Laviniya's mom drove me there and back in the end. Thank you!

The Botanic Resort Club is HUGE! Not only that, I love the many water features they had installed there. The pool is so awesome too! Not that I got in or anything. But I wanted to.

I thought there would be like, at least ten unknown girls there waiting for me to beat them or something but surprise, surprise, there was none. The only girls present were the five from Kota Permai, myself included. There were lots of guys though from there. And here.

Since there were no new girl friends to make, I made some guy friends! Sean, Daryl and... uh... darn, I forgot his name! How could I?! He has the coolest name, I tell you. But I didn't keep in touch with that person. Mhmm, I didn't take a picture of all of us together either. The only group picture I had taken was of myself and Laviniya. Which is with her. I'll bug it for her some time soon.

To cut the match info short, I played two matches. Won the first, 8-2 and lost the second, 6-1 6-2. Because there were only five contestants for that category, I landed myself a silver. Yippee! I wasn't happy with my performance though. It was suckish for sure. By the way, the weather could've been better. It was quite the bit sunny at times, but at others it was nice and cloudy. Wasn't as bad as it was last Saturday, so I'm grateful. Very grateful.

As usual, got a lecture/tell-off from Michael. "Eh, what kinda game you two playing ar?! Ting tong ting tong only wan! Can't even get to the second round in MSSD la I tell you play like that!" You know the drill. I didn't think Laviniya and I were playing that badly. Were we? Oh. And he also told me to tell my mom it's not his fault if I turn "from Snow White into-". I cut him off there, loudly exclaiming I wish my skin was that fair. Since he didn't finish his phrase, I completed it myself! From snow white skin to coal black. I have no regrets whatsoever. For the sake of tennis; my hobby, my passion! <3

Mhmm I'm not sure about this part, but I heard that stuff about the competition is gonna be posted in the newspaper. ...Hope so? Read The Star to find out! Hopefully it comes out tomorrow.

It ain't some cheapskate lightweight medal!

Elongating My List Of Achievements
Friday, March 27, 2009

Reading two of my friends' posts, I just remembered something I forgot. They were talking about and complaining about the fire drill my school had the other day. During that drill, I had killed a fire with a fire extinguisher. It was so cool. 8D The dry dust went right at the fire with a swoooooosh! And the fire died.

I can now say I've become a fire fighter before. Yay!

...I want chocolate. Darn. I do not want french fries and nuggets for dinner. Boohoo.

I've been sick. It might've been a fever, though I'm not sure. Didn't go to a doctor. It reaaaaally hurt though at first. My head throbbed with the slightest bit of quick motion from my eyes. I half-sleeped in class on Monday. Simply stayed home on Tuesday and got plenty plenty of sleep. Better now, but I still have a bit of a sore throat. I seem to be able to sing fine for choir though, oddly o_O They would've never believed my if I said I had a sore throat. I wouldn't believe me either.

So anyway, I can't wait for this Saturday! Gonna have another tournameeeent! At a club this time, so I'm expecting better... views and stuff and things around xD C'mon Resh, you can get a medal! Beat the pants off of the competition! Show 'em what you're made of; pure young youthful energy! Woo! *cheercheer*

Besides that, got a comment from a friend about my previous post. I quote: "y didnt u put my name inside there XD". So, here you go, just for laughs. My good friend Sebastian also retired from his second match, due to the intense heat. It was a truly honourable thing to do and I could've burst into tears right there. Okay, major exaggeration. But hey, I've mentioned him right? :D

Now for another friend of mine; Here's for you, Yee Ling! Tony Pua the politician's name is spelt the way I spelt it: Pua! Not Puah! Yee Ling was complaining about how they sometimes spell his name wrongly on telly. Here's a short excerpt of our conversation, exactly as it went:
Resha Ng says:
ROFLMAO, the funny girl in the background
yeeling says:
what?
yeeling says:
what funny girl in the background?
Resha Ng says:
You. I can just imagine it now.
yeeling says:
OH! you mean like. funny girl cursing rtm tv station in background for getting the great yb tony p's name wrongly XD
Resha Ng says:
TV headline about "Tony Puah", and then there's this girl in the background screaming her head off about the wrong spelling of her favourite politician
Resha Ng says:
Yep, what you said.

That just about cover's tonight's post. Oh, one last thing. I still have to write an immensely long essay for a competition, and the due date's the last day of this month. The bad news is I haven't started at all meaning no plot either, and the worse news is there is no good news :] That will be all, until the next post!

After what seemed like an intense hour of playing tennis under the impossibly blazing hot sun, that's what I am. What I felt like.

My opponent for the tournament I attended earlier today was an eight year old girl who had started playing when she was five. Believe me, she's not that good at all. What I'm trying to say is, I could've beaten her if it wasn't for the sky's shining eye. I couldn't serve properly at all because of its glare, and my skin felt like it was set on fire. It was almost torturous.

In the beginning, I was playing all well and fine. I did all my firm and fast shots, and they were nicely placed. But as time went by, my hard shots turned into flying snails and slowly flew over the net. As if that wasn't bad enough, they all kept flying out of the court. What started out as 3-0 with me in the lead turned out to be 5-7, the first set's win being my opponent's.

I really did feel like giving up already, when the second set got to 2-0, me being left behind. But I felt like I needed to push myself more so I gave myself some self-motivation. It kind of worked, because I'm sure I would've started crawling on the ground already if I didn't have any. I got myself thinking, 'C'mon! You can get this game, Tsing Yu! Win this match!' I kind of held my ground, and it might have been good for my mental health. I might have held my ground a little too much. Either that, or not enough.

The points wouldn't move! It kept changing from Advantage Server, to Deuce, to Advantage Receiver, to Deuce, and back again to the start. It seemed to go on forever! I would have given in already if I wasn't pushing myself so hard. It wasn't enough though, cause in the end I still gave away the game. 3-0 it is, then!

The little girl wanted to go use the washroom, so I sat in the shade and waited. My face was flushed, looking like a tomato, and I was breathing in and out quite heavily. I was feeling down in the dumps, blaming myself for not being to perform better. Coach arrived and said something along the lines of, "There's no shame in retiring, you know. You should if you want to." I shamelessly jumped at the chance of getting away and thus gave the match away.

I don't really have any regrets about today. I really really really thank my friends' and my own coach, Michael, for supporting us so much. And not only that, he's been so tolerant with us, he's amazing. I don't feel like I've let myself down, but I do feel like I've let him down. I feel like he's been just too kind to us, paying for the tournament's fees, buying us lunch and arranging the transportation.

So, thank you, coach. And mom too, in the sidelines, for being so understanding and allowing me to go for tennis class and attend tournaments like this.

P.S. I hope you're better now, Mandy. You had put so much into your matches, and you should be proud. Don't look down on yourself all the time. As for Yee Ling, I hope your ankle heals swiftly! I miss you already. It's a pity you couldn't come with us on this little adventure of the 21st of March.

Legs Hurt. Can't Move.
Tuesday, March 17, 2009

What the title said. Major ouch.

And what might be the cause of my unfading pain? That, my friend, would have to be running around the lake without a single stop for two consecutive days. That, and more running around the court, also for two consecutive days.

Now, I can barely walk. Fantastic, is it not? I love it, 'cause it means I have been attempting to be healthier through vigorous exercising and improving my tennis play.

Also, I hate it. I struggle to walk around the house. I need my food, dang it! I'm waiting for my cheesy wedges to arrive. Which would be downstairs. Please let me emphasize an important note here. Stairs. Like I have said, ouch.

Guess this is what people mean when they say love-hate relationships, eh? Loving and hating something at the same time.

Conclusion: I love-hate the pain in my legs which I am experiencing. And for the record, no, I am not a masochist.

Vincent ze Violin, Vampire with A Coffin
Friday, March 13, 2009

He is totally gorgeous. Feather-light, but still manages to make my arm hurt.

I took the name from most awesome character-person ever, Vincent Valentine of Final Fantasy VII!

Vincent V. is gorgeous too, of course.

Drop-dead gorgeous.

I feel like playing the game all over again just so I can recruit him from his rockin' coffin in the freakin' large mansion of his. He's probably a vampire for all we know. But sadly, he's just a non-blood-sucking human just like all of us, just experimented on by a mad scientist. Not a sexy blood-hunting vamp. Boo hoo.

Still totally too awesome for words though. Like seriously. He's the wallpaper of my phone, and the wallpaper of my netbook.

He deserves to be, definitely.

I swoon just about every time I flip open my phone.

...

*Swoon, swoon, SWOON!*

Uh, back to Vincent the Violin. I've taken great care of him so far. Cleaning him with a tissue when I see the slightest bit of white particles on him, and tucking him carefully into his own personal velvet coffin.

I can play two strings now!

Pshaw, as if that's anything to be actually proud of.

My teacher's only taught me how to play one, but I went ahead and played another.

Typical me, really.

OMGOMGOMG I MISSED OUT ON TENNIS CLASS! NO WAAAAAAY!

I had been waiting a whole week for the time to come, and when it does, it rains! ...Curses.

The worse thing is, the class wasn't called off! For some unexplainable reason, it went on. I, the poor soul, did not know because my phone was at home while I was at camp, sulking over the rain. More curses!

.....

.

So fine. Grah! Anyway, I think the only thing worth mentioning about camp is Petunlia getting the best camper prize. She totally deserves it, and I don't doubt it for a moment. She has one of the most genuinely kind hearts I know! She doesn't realise it either.

Hanabi Saved ♥
Monday, March 2, 2009

The scared little phone was saved after hours trapped in the car.
Translation: I got my phone back early this morning.

She was dying when I got to her!
Translation: The battery was almost dead.

She was screaming loud and clear when mommy got her out.
Translation: The morning alarm I set for school was ringing through the air when the car door was opened.

When I arrived back from school, she had already passed out.
Translation: When I got back home after school, the batteries were dead.

I got her to the ambulance only at seven in the evening. Lucky for me, Hanabi's pretty much immortal so she won't be dying any time soon. Even if the ambulance arrives late.
Translation: I recharged the phone at seven later that day. Phones aren't completely unfixable, they just need charging. Late charges never did any harm.

So! As promised, I got the pictures of yesterday!

Aren't those the most unique door handles ever?! Heart.

In my own personal steamboat bowl was herbal soup. Loooovely stuff. Tried it before? *licks lips* =P Then the noodles arrived. Yay instant-noodle-looking noodles! After that came along rock hard fish. I never ate it. Someone else did.

Theeeen, the moving belt! What could be more appetizing than food on the move? Chocolate! Frozen food to boot!

The frozen foods and noodles were put into the steaming hot bowl of soup. I ate a lot. Loooot. One round after another. Look at the delicioso bubbling consumables!

Yay, time to eat! Itadakimasu! It looked great, and I ate away at it like a hungered wolf. I really do believe I ate like that. I remembered stuffing my mouth full at every opportunity.

Aaaaaah- Burp! See the bowl? Clean as a whistle. I am so going back again.

Oh oh aaaaand about the violin lessons, all the teachers everywhere seem to be fully booked! What the-?! Last shot: Clef Music. Then Yamaha as a completely last resort.

Mommy and I were looking at clothes online. Yay shopaholics! Not that I am one, really. I just enjoy hanging out with shopaholics. Honestly. Anyways, some clothes are really nice! I'm hoping everything goes well with the transactions ♪

Yes! I had shabu shabu earlier for dinner. It was scruuuumptious! It was awesome cause it's just like a mini steamboat meal! Not only that, you get to pick what you want from a moving chain of food in front of you. Like in a sushi bar! Having a whole mini steamboat to yourself is simply fantastic. I kept playing with the heat settings. I couldn't help myself! x3 Talk about not keeping your hands to yourself.

I actually took quite a few pictures, buuuuut I left my phone in the car. Which also means I left my school alarm in there. Poor Hanabi, all cold and alone! I sympathise her so. I will save her as soon as I can, which will probably be tomorrow morning.
